Free encoding software to use in windows movie maker vista?

i have videos i downloaded from the internet & want to burn them onto a dvd using windows movie maker but it's telling me the videos have to be encoded. i want something free without viruses etc in it, & don't want watermarks left on finished product. i have vista. does anyone have any suggestions?
