Is it ok to begin taking The Pill without starting my cycle first?

I recently got The Pill and want to start using it immediately. My doctor advised me that I should wait until I begin my period, however I'm not due for another two weeks. Does anyone know if it's ok to start now anyway? The type I have is Yasmin. Thankyou!
