Calorie intake for dieting?

I currently weigh 123 pounds and my height is 5'3''. My goal weight is 118 pounds, and I want to lose it by the end of July (I am going to the beach). I've done several calorie intake calculators, and all of them have told me that I should be eating about 1600 calories a day to lose weight. To me, this seems like too much. I can have between 800 and 1000 calories a day without feeling like I'm starving myself. But I have heard that having too little calories will put your body in "famine mode", therefore causing you to not lose. So basically I am wondering what the best approach is: 1600 calories a day or what I am currently eating now (800-1000)?
